Angela Davis Speech

The Angela Davis speech had me thinking for hours after it was over. There were parts I agreed with, and parts that I simply could not. Her section about Black Lives Matter really stuck out to me, because it is such an important movement. As she said, and as I have thought since it started, All Lives Matter is a protest to the Black Lives Matter movement even if it has a purpose in mind. Its a protest of their protest, and demeans what they have been fighting for. She said that when black lives matter that is when all lives will finally matter. I hope that one day this supposedly welcoming country becomes welcoming again, not only to foreign citizens, but also the ones who have been here for generations.

The part I could not agree with, and actually very much surprised me was her support of Palestine. My family is 100% Jewish, as well as family members who were born in Israel. Not only for my family, but for our country I can not support that. Her views of not only supporting Palestine, but also hinting towards it being the Jewish peoples fault that she did not get her award is crazy to me. Hearing the amount of applause she got actually made me feel like it was almost hypocritical. In one statement she is advocated for equality to all people, but in the next she is downplaying another group of normal citizens. A countries actions as a military do not dictate how the civilians act or necessarily feel. Living in America that is easy to see. America has been at war for our whole lives, and many people do not support it, but those actions over seas are not our doing exactly as the actions in Israel and Palestine are neither citizens doing.
