ENV 104

In my environmental issues class there was group project that we were required to complete. This project was solely based around the long-term effects of the disastrous Deep Water Horizon Oil spill. In the project I learned a lot about these effects. One huge issue that occurred due to the spill was the death of wildlife. An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 birds died due to the oil from the spill, and oil residue was found in 80% of pelican eggs thousands of miles from the spill. In the area dolphin mortality raised by 8% and their reproductive rate dropped by almost 65% compared to other dolphin populations. As of 2018 the BP oil company who was responsible for this spill had racked up $61.6 billion in legal fees, and the whole region was in an economical crisis for years after.
