Literacy Sketch 3

Proofreading My Papers

In my freshman year of Highschool I learned a lot about how to write better. It took many papers and essays to learn, and plenty of mistakes. The english class I had that year had a big research paper due close to the end that if you got below a 70% you failed the class. A lot of pressure, but for most it just meant more work. I was a freshman, writing was difficult, and boring. I had to pass it though. The problem was that I was 14, I waited till the last second, and definitely didn’t proofread nearly enough. If I remember correctly, I don’t even think I wrote enough. Still I passed this paper in, not a care in the world. When I got the paper back and saw a 75% on top I realized how lucky I was. I was pretty sure my teacher wanted to give me lower, but she didn’t want to fail me. At the time I was just happy I passed, but since then it has been a learning experience. I can’t let boredom and laziness make me fail, it’s a waste of my time and everyone involved. It taught me that even if I finish a paper, if I don’t go over it multiple times I am setting myself up for failure. I still am grateful for the teacher for passing me, even if I really didn’t deserve to. It probably would have changed my life to have an F on my transcript, and I may have not even come here to UNE.
