Original:
Dominant Discourses are the only way that a person can make it through life, or at least that is what James Gee would have the average reader think. In Gee’s articles on Discourse he states that people who have not been born into dominant discourses will find it extremely difficult, sometimes impossible, to learn such a discourse. However in a hypothetical conversation there is always two sides. On one side is Gee, but on the other is June Jordan and Lisa Delpit. Jordan alone explains specific instances when her own students proved this “fact” false. Delpit explained her disagreement in her article because to her it looks as if Gee’s ideas limit people that he considers minorities.

Dominant Discourses are the only way that a person can make it through life, or at least that is what James Gee would have the average reader think. In Gee’s articles on Discourse he states that people who have not been born into dominant discourses will find it extremely difficult, sometimes impossible, to learn such a discourse. Discourse in and of itself is the things that define you as a person, everything from language to how you dress. However in any hypothetical conversation there is always two sides. On one side is Gee, but on the other is June Jordan and Lisa Delpit who both feel that some of what Gee says in his article is wrong. Jordan alone explains specific instances when her own students proved this “fact” as Gee states it, false. Delpit explained her disagreement in her article because to her it looks as if Gee’s ideas limit people that he considers minorities. The problem with Gee’s article is not just that he is limiting people, but his idea of what a Primary Discourse can be is wrong. Our Primary Discourses do not limit us, they help us grow.
Description:
Although very similar to my original, mostly because I really like my intro, I changed a few standings. I further explained where Delpit and Jordan were coming from. At the end I also made my perspective clear, and set up the rest of the paper to help explain my point.
