Interpretation

This chapter provides definitions and ways to use interpretation on a college campus, which is a very important subject on all college campuses. Dr. Thomashow explains that all visitors to college are there to learn, not necessarily academics, but in some cases about the school itself or the things it does. He tells the reader that when he could he would talk to visitors and explain to them how the schools sustainable projects work on campus. This does not only show people what the campus is doing sustainably, but it makes people think critically about the issues that cause a school to shift towards sustainability. It helps to inform the population on environmental problems, and can help people become more sustainable a long as the educators help thevisitors to interpret these projects as such.

Dr. Thomashow also explains the concept of evocative interpretation and the need to ask relevant questions in order to have people interpret the information in a specific way. This can help a campus spread their ideas without forcing them on people by instead making people think and understand the ideas on their own. This is done through specific questions that push towards the idea you want them to understand. For example, at UNE you could ask a group of visitors how much they know about the Saco River and how it benefits the area the campus is on, or you could explain to them the sustainable projects that we have and what they actually do for the campus and the region surrounding. However, in this day and age Thomashow explains we need to balance our ideas in the visceral world and the virtual world when teaching people about sustainability on campus. This meaning that technology is so big in our society now that in order to fully teach the people on campus about sustainability you need to include technological teaching as well as physically showing them how the projects work. The time that we live in requires a technological perspective, especially with everything going on right now with the Covid-19 pandemic. Being able to accurately show “visitors” what UNE has to offer only using the online platform is enormously important, and that was really shown when the school was forced to stop tours and actual visits to campus.
