Over the semester we learned how to actively read at a much higher level than we used to in high school. We learned how to further annotate and learn from our annotations in a articles that we used for our papers. Specifically in James Gee’s article my annotations were developed, and much better than any of my annotations in high school. In whole however I do need to work on specific types of annotations in order to further my active reading.
Understanding: In Gee’s article I had a annotation early in the article that said “This woman speaks about every solution for every problem. In it you can see how dedicated she is to succeeding.” This comment helped me to understand the true meaning of full discourse, and the woman in this part shows how dedicated she is to learning this particular Discourse.
Questioning: At one point Gee has portion where he says that we would be better off if people only joined Discourse that we fully learned, and throughout the project we used Gee for I continued to question this idea. Why can’t people learn any Discourse they want? And furthermore why does Gee get to tell people that.
Relating: For this particular article, and even newer ones I have annotated I noticed that I had little to no relating annotations. I never really connected one article to another, or to myself in annotations. So this category is definitely something I have to work on.
Challenging: There is a portion in Gee’s article where he says that your home life, or primary discourse is too personal to help develop secondary discourses, but in one of my annotations I challenged this idea. I feel that your primary discourse doesn’t only help you through life, but also further develops secondary discourses and is one of your most important resources.
Rhetorical: When Gee has the portion where he says that faking a discourse isn’t impossible, but extremely difficult, and my annotation for the section agrees. Its very hard to fake what can basically be equated to a lifestyle with little practice, but it is possible fake like you know the discourse.
