For our projects that we did in this class they were all in MLA format. Writing in this format is mostly about how you set up quotations, paraphrases, signal phrases, and the work cited. I personally had to work on this, but learned soon into the semester how to do this reasonably well. My signal phrases developed, and I learned how to cite articles in the text. This quote for instance, from my showcase project, shows how I set up a quote sentence:
“Throughout reading Gee it becomes evident that he believes that these minorities as he calls them are at a significant disadvantage because of the way they were raised ‘The problem is deepened by the fact that true acquisition of many mainstream Discourses involves, at least while being in them, active complicity with values that conflict with one’s home and community-based Discourses, especially for many women and minorities’ though even if they conflict there are ways to use your own Discourse productively (13).”
As you can see this quote has a signal phrase leading up to the quote, the quote, and a short conclusion to the idea stated in the signal phrase. All of this plus the citation at the end, which doesn’t need a name because Gee’s name is mentioned earlier in the sentence, complete a full MLA formatted quotation sentence. The lessons in class, and online help lead me to making sentences like these. Here is another example:
“Although all the students had grown up speaking so called “Black English” when it was put in front of them they criticized it, ‘Just about unanimously, their criticisms targeted the language. I listened to what they wanted to say and silently marveled at the similarities between their casual speech patterns and Alice Walker’s written version of Black English'(Jordan 364).”
In comparison to the last quote this quote does not have a conclusion, which in reality isn’t needed for MLA, but helps to set up the quote fully. The other edition is Jordan’s name in the citation which is due to her name not being mentioned in the sentence previously to the quote.
The other portion that we worked on was the works cited page which includes hanging indents, and has to be in alphabetical order. With this said we also learned how to specifically cite different works, such as a article in a book etc.
